There's been a lot of interest recently in the new MrSID compression
techniques. Everyone who's interested in this area (both the compression
and decompression side) should check out the functionality offered by ER
Mapper 6 (www.ermapper.com).
Some of the features in ER Mapper 6 are:
Patented image compression (using wavelet compression - similar to MrSID)
Royalty-free image compressor built into ER Mapper 6
Rectification, mosaicing and balancing wizards for easy compilation of air
photo libraries
and the best bit....
Free MapInfo and ArcView plug-ins for viewing imagery (including compressed
imagery)
I haven't seen any head to head comparisons of ER Mapper vs MrSID so can't
comment on that. However, the ER Mapper decompression works like lightening
in MapInfo. I tested it out by mosaicing 6 x 1:100,000 scanned maps (total
~350MB), then compressing it to 23MB (!), then viewing the compressed mosaic
in MapInfo. The re-draw performance was (subjectively) better than you
would get with a 23MB tiff file and image quality of the entire mosaic was
superb.
Note: Encom Technology is a national distributor of ER Mapper.
