If you can afford it, I would go with Caliper Corp.'s (www.caliper.com)
TransCAD GIS which is designed explicitly for analysing transport and other
linear networks.  The base version (US$3,000) contains a suite of network
tools including route systems and linear referencing.  Its thematic mapping
capabilities also allow depiction of two-way bandwidth maps, which I think
you are looking for.  Mapinfo cannot graduate lines in its thematic mapping
(it can for points), as yet, and doesn't look like it will be doing so in
the future.
