I have, I hope, a quick question that MapInfo will respond to here. There is an emerging National standard for road maps. This is being conducted by the Federal Geographic Data Committee at the following address: http://www.fgdc.gov/ Its an interesting site that we -US mappers - should all keep an eye upon. Our company is soon to release our next version of a product for which we plan to bundle a county map Streetworks map with. We are astounded that suddenly our largest market looks to be the Federal, State, and local government agencies (we built the darned thing for crop scouts and now everyone wants in on the act!). My question is, as we (RHS and MapInfo) deliver these county road maps will they adhere to the National Standards noted above? If not when and how? But most importantly if Streetworks is not compliant but soon will be, will there be a "reasonable" upgrade cost. The reason I ask about reasonableness is that I believe commercial data providers DO add value but at some point its utility versus cost send users toward FREE data. If the government decides to post the data for free and it has good or Postal accuracy, such availability effectively eliminates a commercial market with mass appeal for Streeworks data sets. Mostly though I do not want our and your users going to ESRI's web to down load free road maps using free translators like Blue Marble's to essentially kill commercial data providers. Does this make cents?
