yes.... don't get lured by data vendors... Purchase "PhoneDisc" from InfoUSA
at Circuit City or Best Buy (in the US). I used a product called ProCD for a
while until they put a stop at exporting 5000 records (and stopped the cut
and paste functions too!)...then a fee..HA! Instead I resort to
PhoneDisc....and in my case, my search for SIC codes has 34000 records, so I
cut and paste 134 times (although this product blocks you out at 250
records....cut and paste is still enabled).......
See in my industry there are certain words in a company's' name that tell
me right away that it's NOT a competitor and I don't need these
records....so in Microsoft ACCESS I've written several queries that
eliminate the useless records....all 11000 of them. What am I going to do?
....pay .20 cents per record for 11000 useless ones?! That's $2200.00 USD.
See the only thing this company does is send the actual phone books to some
3rd world country, then have people type in each listing. most of them do
not even speak English, so not only do you get bad addresses...but you also
get a lot of mistakes (missing or skipped phone numbers)...... So In my case
all I need are strictly Self Storage facilities, and not "Johnny's Self
Storage and Car wash".....because I know that the latter is not a serious
competitor.
Don't get me wrong. The data extracted (with a bit of work) form PhoneDisc
is a lot better than paying $16000 or more for a product like Dunn & Brad
street or Claritas, NDS, UDS or what ever the product vendor may be only to
find out that they too extracted from PhoneDisc!
It's all part of a stinking monopoly here in the US, a company called ABI
just finished acquiring all yellow + white page companies and now they own
them all....and maintain each products original names.... so yes...ABI owns
ProCD and PhoneDisc...plus many others......

Subject: MI Business Data
Does anyone know where I can purchase data on business types per city? For
example, If I wanted the addresses of all dry cleaners in Washington, D.C.,
who would I contact for such data? Are all business type uniquely identified
by a Standard Industry
Code?
Thanks
Lewis
