The best source will depend upon what you are doing. If you want actual
addresses then one of the products based on telephone directory information
may work well. Though you will need to be careful depending upon what
industries you are interested in. These data will be very complete with
respect to retail establishments, but many manufacturing/wholesaling
facilities may be missed, or give wrong addreses (i.e satellite facilities
will usually list the billing address, rather than actual location).
If you don't care about actual addresses or company names, you may want to
have a look at Census Bureau's County Business Patterns. You can get
industry counts down to zip codes. Data is based upon establishments, so
it picks up all of the satellite facilities in their correct locations.
Problem is that the data are released with a lag. I believe the most
current data is 1997.
Like I said. Which one is best for you all depends upon what you are doing.
