Thanks to those who replied with suggestions on how to solve the problem.
In the end, and after 4 hours of trial and error (which included deleting my
profile and starting again) I solved the problem. If (and I don't know the
reason why) the HP2500 is not the default printer it prints out grey scale.
If it is the default printer, it prints out in colour. The 8500 printer
sorted itself out when I recreated the profile. The reason I recreated the
profile in the first place is that while I was logged in as administrator,
everything worked OK.
Go figure that one out (and if anyone does, please let me know!!)
