Thomas,
I whole hartedly agree - another item for the Wish List.
In a similar fashion, a built-in dynamic scale bar is also required. Draw a
box for the area you want the scale bar to take up, and MapInfo should
adjust it to the ideal as you zoom in and out.

Subject: MI UTM Grids
Dear List,
My former boss (chief geologsit of an exploration company) finally was
convinced that MapInfo is a useful tool to produce maps for reporting
exploration results. Since I recommended MapInfo, I am now in the position
to "consult" him over some hurdles he has in using MapInfo.
Today, I received the simple question: "How can I produce a UTM coordinate
grid ?". Sounds simple, also sounds something a mapping application is ought
to do with ease.
Well, the gridmaker.mbx seems only to do Longitude/latitude grids. I usually
used Geobasemap for my coordinate grids, which the asking person does not
have.
Luckily I remembered (and found again) the graticule.mbx utility from Mark
Ogilvie (?), which produces a grid in (apparently almost any) the current
mapper projection. Grid spacing is set up according to the mapper's zoom
level. If you pan and zoom the
map the grid is adjusted on the fly. Really great, really big thanks to the
author of this neat utility.
However, this leads (as usually) to the question, why such a function (plus
some enhancements and debugging) is not built in MapInfo natively ? (If it
is, where ?). There should be an option to toggle on and of a coordinate
grid.
If I would not have been aware to the graticule.mbx, my "client" would
probably left without a satisfying solution. I doubt that this would have
encouraged him to use MapInfo enthusiasticly. For his purposes (and I
believe many other users' as well) locational reference, and hence a
coordinate grid, is something essential. It should be definitely in the MI
package, no excuse.
The graticule utility seems to be quite small, it should not be too
difficult for MapInfo programmers to provide a bulit in version in the next
release.
Kind regards
