PCensus has been installed by many Universities in Canada (York, U of
Calgary, U of Toronto, etc.) to provide easy access to census data
for course assignments (business admin, sociology, poly-science,
geography, etc.). The PCensus package retrieves demographics for
standard census areas (enumeration areas, census tracts, etc) or for
user defined circular or polygon areas. These later searches require
the user to input coordiantes (lat/long) for the center of the circle
or vertices of the polygon. This is a great exercise for students to
learn how data is referenced geographically but tedious if you have
many areas to do.
PCensus for MapInfo utilizes mapping features so you simply locate or
trace out an area on a street map. Retrieved data is easily
displayed as thematic maps. The additional cost is for the ability
to link PCensus with MapInfo.
PCensus includes the STF1A 1990 census at the block group level (978
variables) and the 1996 Canadian population and dwelling counts at
the enumeration area level. Additional databases can be purchased.
