This has been my pet peeve for years now. MI (30., 4.0, 4.1, 4.5, 5.0, &
5.5) will not print 24 bit color images to postscript printers. I don't
care what you do to the registry it just will not do it. It resamples the
images down to 8 bit using the Windows default color pallet which turns
aerials into dithered garbage. I spoke with MI founder Andrew Dressel at
MapWorld about it and he confirmed what I am saying. We discussed a
solution to the problem that I hope will be included as an update or in the
next version of MI.

                Subject: Sum: MI 24 bit color support

                Dear list,

                The other day I asked for info. on color support with raster
images (see
                below).

                "Can anyone give me the "lowdown" on MapInfo V4 & V5 support
for 24 bit
                color
                and adjusting the registry."

                The main response I received was that the release of MapInfo
V5.5 will
                feature
                "Support for 24-bit Color including transparency,
brightness, contrast,
                greyscale"

                We are just moving to MapInfo V5.01! So being able to switch
between modes
                is still an issue.
                As I mentioned in my original message.

                "Unfortunately the IT dept. in my company locks me out of
adjusting any
                registry settings. Is there any other method to change these
settings??"

                To fix the editing of my inaccessible registry one of our
support people
                (thanks Kyle Morris) has written two (.REG) files which can
change the key
                by running either one or the other.
                They are text files and contain the following :

                MapInfo UseTrueColor 24bit.reg (file name)
                REGEDIT4
                ;

MapInfo graphics
                ; engine dithering 24bit images down to 8bit
                ; the possible values are as follows :
                ;               UseTrueColor=0 [dither 24bit down to 8bit]
                ;               UseTrueColor=1 [display 24bit images in
TrueColor]
                ;
                ;

                [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MapInfo\MapInfo\Common]
                "UseTrueColor"=dword:00000001

                MapInfo UseTrueColor 8bit.reg (file name)
                REGEDIT4
                ;
                ; This seting allows the user to stop/start the

                ;               UseTrueColor=0 [dither 24bit down to 8bit]
                ;               UseTrueColor=1 [display 24bit images in

                ;

                [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MapInfo\MapInfo\Common]
                "UseTrueColor"=dword:00000000

                The MBX applications "colorsupport" http://www.mapONE.com &
MapImagery
                http://www.gid.com do switch between 24 & 8 bit, but only
when you have
                access to the registry.

                This now leads me to another response I have received and
this is that the
                24 bit raster does NOT work in 5.5 as stated. This has
apparently been
                proven by on of our resellers "Desktop Mapping Systems" here
in Perth.
                Can anybody comment on this?

                One other thing. If MapInfo has 24 bit enabled, it appears
to still print
                the image dithered?
                This was tested with an aerial photograph scanned at 150dpi,
24 bit in tif
                format.
                Has anyone else found this happens?

                Finally thanks to those who responded to my original message
