This pretty much makes the clip region function useless huh? How often do
you make a map without a scalebar?
Make a new layer, draw a big square over your area of interest, clip out
the stuff you don't want to see using the "Erase" function. Add it to the
map above the stuff to be clipped but below the scalebar and anything else
you don't want to show outside the extent.
