Dyan,

I can understand the frustration of having to "scan" hundreds of images. We used to
get slides from the USDA and scan
them to PhotoCD. Now we just use spatial mulitmedia -

In the case you might need to also scan analog slides or images to lower thumb nail
resoultion digital I would suggest
you also consider Kodak PhotoCD technology. Kodak is a leader in the capture of film
to digital formats; their
PhotoCDs can store five (or six?) master images at popular resolutions for each image.
 They also have a "professional"
scan (like 30 image sets to a CD) with a resolution that approaches (and some have
told me) exceeds most film quality.
They also have nifty utilities set to preview and export to a number of digital image
types. No, I don't believe they
do geoTIFF yet - but they may. Rumor has it they may soon release a GPSized digital
camera!

I believe that they can get around 120-140 very high res scanning (>800dpi) and well
as lower thumb resoultions as
well. Our experience has been if we give our local lab slides by four PM we can get
the ROM back the second day's
morning or likely five days for Fed Express. Our lab does thousands of slides weekly
and they have always been
interested in special projects.
