INDEED, Frank and Warren,
i did print transparent raster images with the 5.5 beta. There was a
small bug in the beta, but mapinfo told me that in the shipping version
it would be fixed.
The plotfiles are still very large, i created files between 300 and 700
MB for plots of size A3.
