Many thanks to Rob Healy, Richard Duncan, and David Haycroft for their answer to the chainage question. Rob pointed out an mbx called distance marker on the Mapinfo-L ftp site which does the trick perfectly. David Haycroft similarly had an mbx which did the same job. Interestingly, the two mbx's don't produce quite the same result, they disagree by about 10m over 30kms. I don't know why, or which one is more accurate, but that sort of error is not critical for me in this case. Thanks for your help. And while I'm here, the people that wrote the Geographic Explorer should be knighted, or given a nobel prize or something - it's one of those little things which makes a world of difference to working habits. Being able to take a quick look at data files just by a right click is great, really helps to get things sorted out quickly.
