Is MrSID the best compressed imagery format ?
A comparison between MrSID and ECW (Earth Resource Mapping's compressed
imagery format) is available at

There's some evidence here that the ECW format, and the reading/writing
support provided for it by Earth Resource Mapping, offers significant
quality, speed and cost advantages over MrSID.
The comparison indicates that ECW provides:
** Better image quality **
Quicker compression
** Much quicker decompression/display **
Free compressor (for images 500MB or less)
** Free ECW plug-ins for eg. MapInfo, ArcView, PhotoShop available
