I have a related question: Has anyone figured out how to display a point with an offset label using "shield" placement type, so the point is part of the label and not a "symbol"? This would be useful for labeling cities with both a marker (star, circle, etc) and label at smaller scales where not all the cities will be labeled due to placement conflicts (especially useful in dense city-regions with many good-sized cities close to one another).

In other words, if you look at the top image at mapnik.org, assuming the 'P' symbols are points, how could you label the symbols so they symbol and the label are readable?

Or looking at openstreetmap at
http://openstreetmap.com/?lat=44.97817&lon=-93.26898&zoom=16&layers=B0FT

How do you define the settings to get the labels above the red dots?

Well our stylesheet is here:

http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/applications/rendering/mapnik/osm-template.xml

but the answer is that we use dy="-..." on the text symboliser to
offset the text above the symbol.
