I had a similar problem recently and wonder if this is a bug in mapnik. Some of the highway-shields had their label-text moved sidewards on the left by some 100 pixels, thus appearing empty (it took me some time to discover that the text was on the left, because it is white). Is this a known issue? I currently render with Ubuntu 10.04, current mapnik stable and generate_tiles.py (self.m.buffer_size = 350). This happens (rarely) on an irregular basis and the same shields with the same text content beneath the buggy ones don't show this behaviour.
