Maybe, for a map with that size, is a good ideia to work with SVG and Illustrator or Inkscape. You can export SVGs from Mapnik, QuantumGIS, OpenStreetMap or Maperitive. With SVGs you can get press quality art with low memory cost. Regards, Pablo.
