Looking at the Tirex-statistics for ptolemy the following question comes to my mind: Does Tirex really render meta-tiles? It rather looks like every tile (256x256) is rendered on it's own. According to Frederik, Yevaud renders a meta-tile of 8x8 'normal' tiles per request. If so, that could explain a lot of the different rendering output.
