Hi Astrid: Nope they don't. MINSCALEDENOM and MAXSCALEDENOM only control layer visibility. SYMBOLSCALE and the computed SCALE are combined to form a scale factor that is applied to a symbol's SIZE. Once that's done, the MINSIZE/MAXSIZE values are applied to make sure the final computation is in range.
