How can I combine a pre-rendered hillshade model with an elevation layer? Can I set the transparency of a layer? Is there a GDAL utility for rendering a combined hillshade/elevation model which will still retain the original elevation values for query?

Do I need to define classes and symbols for the layer (that would not help for the hillshade) or should I execute a script (PERL) on the server to create the image I need on the fly?
