Thanks Norman and Bart for your suggestions,   I have tried the commands you suggested with a directory of ecw files and then a directory containing tif files, the shapefile created for the tif’s is fine but there seems to be some issue with producing shapefile index for ecw files (although I have manage to do this fine previously on a different server).
