Hi Jennifer,
If you post the output of gdalinfo for both your original and your
new file, that will help us troubleshoot with you. Can you do that?

internal tiles. I used this syntax taken from the examples:
gdal_translate -co TILED=YES original.tif tiled.tif
The resulting file has solid grey where there was supposed to be
hillshade and black where there is no data.
If you need additional information please let me know. Perhaps I'm
reaching a file size limitation?
