We stopped upgrading MapInfo at version 4.01.

I had a number of exchanges with them that went something like:

You should add feature X to MapInfo. It would really help me
accomplish my tasks.

Oh no. It would be impossible to do X. You don't understand.

But Maptitude can do X. It must not be impossible.

Maptitude is a lot different from Mapinfo, especially in general
concept, but also in user interface. It took me a very long time to
relearn how to do everything.

We are mainly interested in printed output, and Maptitude prints a
lot nicer than Mapinfo. Especially the way the Highway layer comes
with all the styles predefined and the state highway shields.

Ask you MapInfo friends if the software can do a dot density map with
two different color dots representing two different variables. Blue
dots for renters, and red dots for homeowners, as an example. Several
years ago, that was one of those "impossible" things.

Maptitude is still lacking in user interface in regard to layout.
Things like the ability to place an object in a certain spot, or to
make an object a certain size. Also things like not being able to
undo operations on a layout.

In MapInfo it's a lot easier to manipulate geographic objects. Like
cut and paste between layers, or change the appearance of one object
on a layer, or have a layer on a map twice.

I have many Maptitude files that I can no longer open for unknown
reasons, but all my MapInfo files still open.

So there are still a lot of areas that Maptitude could learn from
MapInfo, but for what we do, Maptitude is clearly superior. The
people are nicer too.

And those seamless geographic layers (national streets and census
geographies) make it a killer deal.
