In a previous thread Armando and others provide some powerful ways
to 'enhance' Maptitude (and, we know that Transcad was developed with
GISDK). Therefore the possiblities are limitless. However, I am
skeptical of the 'opensource' nature of GISDK Add-Ins. The first
problem with Add Ins are that there is no formal 'peer review' of
these add ins (no offence to brilliant programmers like Armando).
ArcView performed most of the real geospatial analysis with 'Avenue'
add ins. The quality was atrocious. The main reason I use Caliper
products is becasue of the high quality and precision of its
functions. The functions must have been thoroughly tested before they
were/are marketed. While using Transcad I trust the functions because
there is clear indication of involvement of highly qualified leaders
at Caliper who are familiar with rigorous scientific peer reviews.

The second reason Caliper is my choice is its database design. It
uses topology instead of geometry-only. This provided the major
reason for me to absolutely avoid ArcView (note that ESRI
reintroduced topology in its ArcMap products; ArcInfo had topology).
Topological integration is vital to proper geocoding, proper
implementation of TIGER files etc (to say the least).

If anyone is interested in the quality of peer reviewed scintific
publication as a basis for software quality then Caliper is the
choice. Keep it up Caliper. Regards.
