Alex: >Is it possible to "subdivide" a particular layer into smaller sets >and specify different autoscale level for each subset.
If you choose Selection-Settings and highlight a selection set other that the layer or the automatic selection set called Selection, the Autoscale button is enabled, so you can have different autoscale settings for each selection set. Make sure that the layer itself is invisible, so just the selection sets are drawn. Also, if the selection sets do not have their own styles, you can use the Reset button in the Style dialog box to reset a selection set back to the layer's style.
