What type (format) file is it?  If it is a .cdf file, it is read-only by
nature (loads faster and takes less space). If something else, it should
be editable.  Is it a file that came with Maptitude, or something you've
created or added from another source?

Green background, not linked to anything, not shaded.  It was 
opened "For Exclusive Access" and when I added a column Maptitude 
made it read-only.
