You didn't describe how you created the column in the first place. Was this a column created as a formula field?
Creating a formula does not add the column permanently to the table and it is not an editable column. The reason is that the formula will always be re-calculated, for instance as a function of other columns. If you want to create a permanent modifiable column, you should first add it with Dataview-Modify Table.
