You didn't describe how you created the column in the first place.  Was this
a column created as a formula field?

Creating a formula does not add the column permanently to the table and it
is not an editable column.  The reason is that the formula will always be
re-calculated, for instance as a function of other columns.

If you want to create a permanent modifiable column, you should first add it
with Dataview-Modify Table.  Then you can fill it with the desired formula
(Edit-Fill).

My new boss suggested saving the dataview as a .dbf and opening that 
as a new file.  It worked and was editable.  I'm one who expects 
software to work the way the menu items and manuals suggest, but he 
is used to finding work-arounds for everything.
