Michael,     If I understand what you are doing, or trying to do,    You can put a band around each datapoint and select the zips in contact with that band.   In Chapter 15,  Creating Bands,  I think will walk you through.  BTW   You're doing a heck of a job...........     ;-) Couldn't pass it up. Anyone have suggestions?   I'm already mapping the data (color coded by value), and won't be mapping the zip codes.
