Do a thematic on the areas you are looking at.  In the settings select the field that contains the 'A1, A2...'    and in the 'Styles Tab' you can set each color to what you want by clicking on the 'Style Button'

You may also want to,  In the Map Layers menu,  Select the 'Layer > Style'  and set the 'Border Style' to None so you don't have all the small lines depicting each zip on your map.

Sorry if this seems basic but I do need the help. I am trying to map
out predetermined zones by postal zip codes. I have a list of zips that
cover the entire country which I have coded a zone for each I want to
map them in different colors and present them by overall view and by
different starting points. So say I have a list of zips that I have
assigned number A1 in my data set I want them to be blue I have another
set of zips I have assigned A2 want them yellow etc..
Any help is greatly appreciated
