Thanks for the suggestion. 

I have tried to do what you suggested, and somehow I only the get the area of 
an 
individual band in the dataview, rather than the total square footage around 
all 
of the bands.

Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong?

Hi Jeff:

If I understand your question correctly a possible solution is as follows:

Make your day care centers  layer the working layer, and go to the bands dialog 
box (as you described in your question)

It seems that you want to know the total square footage around all day cares 
combined, so you do not need to check the "separate bands" option.

Once you have the new band layer, right click on the band layer in the Display 
Manager and choose New Dataview. The Area field displays the area of the bands 
in the system units which can be changed under Edit-Preferences (to feet for 
example).
