I believe that the key question is what you are trying to measure: the total area that is within some radius of *all* daycares, or the area that is within some radius of *each* daycare.
If you want the former, then a single area (which may be comprised of non-contiguous parts) is in fact appropriate. You want the "separate bands" box unchecked. From your previous message, it sounded like this is what you were looking for. But if you want the latter, then a number of areas equaling the number of daycares is appropriate. You want the "separate bands" box checked. What's the difference? Any two daycares within half of the selected threshold of each other will have overlapping bands. Any such overlapping areas would be double-counted if you sum the area of the bands. --- In [email protected], [email protected] wrote: > > Hi Jeff: > > Hopefully this will help: > > If you want the areas around each point then check the "separate bands" > option in the buffer/band dialox box. > > Maptitude Mapping Software <http://www.caliper.com> Group Moderator > > --- In [email protected], Jeff Kelly Lowenstein > <jkellylowenstein@> wrote: > > > > Thanks for the suggestion. > > > > I have tried to do what you suggested, and somehow I only the get the > area of an > > individual band in the dataview, rather than the total square footage > around all > > of the bands. > > > > Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong? > > > > Jeff > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: "[email protected]" > [email protected] > > To: [email protected] > > Sent: Wed, February 2, 2011 10:02:26 AM > > Subject: [Maptitude] Re: Bands question. > > > > > > Hi Jeff: > > > > If I understand your question correctly a possible solution is as > follows: > > > > Make your day care centers layer the working layer, and go to the > bands dialog > > box (as you described in your question) > > > > It seems that you want to know the total square footage around all day > cares > > combined, so you do not need to check the "separate bands" option. > > > > Once you have the new band layer, right click on the band layer in the > Display > > Manager and choose New Dataview.
