Doug Shapiro of Banc of America Securities on the 2006 outlook for
media businesses: "We forecast 5.7 percent advertising revenue growth
in 2006, slightly less than forecasted nominal GDP growth, owing to the
benefits of businesses starting to loosened purse strings and the
political/Olympics effect, offset by the continuing shift of marketing
budgets below-the-line, several troubled large ad categories (namely
autos and pharma) and continued weakness in local ad media." He
added, "Investors may turn more attention to content companies in
2006 as they realize that they are in position to extract the lion's share
of the economics in emerging digital distribution platforms, like
broadband and wireless."
