TOP STORY -- BellSouth, the main telephone provider in nine
southeastern states, said that hurricane-related costs contributed to a
more than 54 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit despite solid gains in
DSL customers and a minor increase in revenue. The Atlanta-based
telco said it earned $618 million (34 cents/share) for the three months
ending Dec. 31, compared to a profit of $1.36 billion (74 cents/share) in
the same period a year ago.

Craig Moffet of Bernstein Research on DirecTV's price hike: "As we have
noted in response to the price increases already taken by Comcast and
EchoStar, the market narrative of "intensifying competition" has become
so deeply ingrained in consensus thinking that it is now taken to be
gospel. But in the face of continued price increases for all operators, it is
worth questioning whether that consensus view is supported by the
facts." He added, "Prices continue to rise for all competitors, and
EchoStar's total video ARPU is rising no faster than that of its
competitors and peers. For value-oriented customers, EchoStar remains
the 'cheapest game in town.'"
