Despite decreased earnings from a year ago, when it posted a big gain on asset sales, revenue rose 5.8 percent to $19.3 billion, beating analyst estimates of $19.1 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

The firm says cable's share may have slipped to 57 percent at the end of 2005, while the share for telco offerings of DSL and fiber may have grown to 41 percent. Nonetheless, cable may retain a five million subscriber lead over DSL in 2009 and 2010. Cable modem services are projected to have 35 million customers in 2010, while DSL has a forecasted 30 million that year, Strategy Analytics says."
