a Ph.D. thesis, at least in my experience.
I'm not so familiar with LaTeX for music. I have heard that one can
integrate LilyPond with LaTeX, but I don't know much about it. See, e.g.,

As far as I know LaTex is not used in music. I had heard of the
integration of LilyPond into LaTex but was unclear as to what advantage
is would bring to LilyPond. I am not familiar with LilyPond. In our
area, Sibelius is more of the software packages used in Academia.
Thanks re: the use of LaTex in elect. engineering and math. Another good
reason to seek integration with LaTex.
