Hi Graham, I'll just add this parting thought: Actually, I enjoy a good debate but, IMHO, long OT posts in threads pollute and dilute the useful information the threads sometimes contain. When one has ideas that need lengthy explanation, and that aren't central to the original subject, maybe a better approach is to have one's blog somewhere and post articles there, which one can then link to (succinctly) in one's mailing list posts. Then the subsequent discussion can take place in the comments thread after the article.
