The more I think about it, the less I like the idea of fixed categories. I guess I'd rather extend the calendar to allow for tags instead. As long as the user is fine with filtering only by one single tag, this is easy (can use simple URLs for that). If the user wants to include more tags, then a manually crafted URL will do. If people have some discipline/agreement over what tags to use, I guess this will work better than categories.
