Tom, I'd like to quickly jump in here, perhap opening a new thread if necessary. I am not part of the Membership Committee, and therefore my suggestion should not be taken as anything authoritative. If you do what you have written below (helping people on users mailing lists and forums) then it means that your contribution is documented, and therefore you're eligible for membership. I thought I'd point it out of fairness and out of information as I feel many people do not know or are not aware of their eligibility.
