OpenOffice was under the Oracle stewardship for less than 18 months (Jan 2010-Jun 2011), and some people loved to hate that.
Now it has been under the Apache stewardship, and totally independent of Oracle, for more than 24 months, and either those people haven't checked facts in 2 years, or they are simply reading/disseminating FUD.
