I am trying to get what I can done, it seems like anytime I start a new
project like this, something starts happening at work, and I lose all the
free time that I thought I was going to have.

I do not see anything wrong with doing what you are doing, I just wish we
had a little more feedback from a couple of the higher-ups. not sure if
they are okay with us just starting to organize ourselfs. As far as I know
there are about 5 people from the US that have shown some interest. It
would be nice to set up a US and Canada main contact so we can get going.
