Dear MARMAM community,
Dr. Andreas Fahlman and I are pleased to share our recently published Letter to the Editor, "Central command activation and the dive response in marine mammals," in the Journal of Applied Physiology. We wrote this letter as a follow-on to the following article: Araújo MS, Lima AS, Guerrero RVD, Vianna LC. Central command activation during exercise is an essential mechanism to sustain diving bradycardia. J Appl Physiol. 2025 Jun 30;139(2):355-364. doi: 10.1152/japplphysiol.00274.2025<https://doi.org/10.1152/japplphysiol.00274.2025>. The original article highlights the role of central command activation, which is associated with the volitional control of exercise, in reinforcing diving bradycardia in exercising humans. We found this paper to be thought-provoking and wrote this letter to suggest a possible extension of their findings to marine mammals. Blawas AM, Fahlman A.
