Dear MARMAM Community

In this article I investigate the mass stranding events of long-finned pilot
whales in Scotland from the perspective of sound studies/acoustemology -
thinking about the multifaceted relations between sound and strandings through
a close reading of the biological literature, official stranding reports, and
media reports. Not only is anthropogenic noise pollution implicated in some
strandings, but the sounds of stranded whales can be deeply affecting for human
rescuers and are potentially diagnostic of animal welfare. Moreover, humans
have memorialized stranded whales through music and sound art. I hope to show
that a focus on sound as sense-making provides fresh insight into the embodied,
affective and reciprocal nature of the evolutionary, ontological and social
relations between humans and cetaceans.
