Volunteer Programme – Cetacean Research & Conservation, Algoa Bay, South
Africa

BANA – Bay Action Network Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation
dedicated to conservation projects in the Algoa Bay area in Port Elizabeth
(Gqberha), South Africa. In particular, its research focuses on the Algoa
Bay area and the Addo submarine canyons off the continental shelf, an area
of high cetacean diversity where numerous species have been recorded.

Through a collaboration with Raggy Charters, the oldest eco-whale watching
company in the region, BANA offers an international volunteer programme
combining marine conservation, wildlife monitoring, environmental
education, ecotourism, cultural exchange and life by the ocean.

Volunteers work alongside marine biologists and the marine guides and
become involved in ongoing field activities and conservation projects.
Research activities include marine mammal sighting and effort data
collection, wildlife photography and photo-identification. Collected data
contribute to long-term research on cetacean populations, distribution,
migration patterns, behaviour and conservation.

Volunteers may also assist with boat operations, environmental education,
guest interaction and other conservation activities. No previous experience
is required, as guidance is provided by the team.
