Hello MARMAM community,

This summer, I ran a few small-group feedback sessions with many marine
mammals researchers from the MARMAM community — and the response was so
good that I wanted to share what we learned and offer more support.

The sessions were a nice opportunity for researchers and others to share
what they urgently need help with, and what we can build to help further.

Although everyone came from different parts of the world, organizations,
and with different primary study species and reasons for joining, there was
a common thread. Everyone wanted more capacity, faster results, better
collaboration, and more trust from their audiences — funders, stakeholders,
rights holders, and decision-makers — in the evidence they’re producing to
guide smarter decisions.

We also got great input on what we need to focus on next for the analysis
of marine mammal data for monitoring, research, and conservation.

A key theme was the need to go further beyond field observations and bring
diverse sources of data together into their projects — eDNA, temperature,
autopsy and other lab results, rescue, patient, and autopsy data.

This would be particularly valuable for issues that require collaboration
across countries and organizations, such as tracking emerging diseases like
H1N1 and rabies in marine mammals and other animals, understanding the
impacts of marine pollution, fisheries, and heatwaves on mammal
populations, or evaluating conservation initiatives such as IMMA success or
EIAs across populations and sites.

We’ve been working with the scientists who made these recommendations to
add these capabilities into eOceans — enabling shared workflows with their
collaborators and, ultimately, making them available to everyone. (Want to
try these new capabilities? Sign up to be a beta tester for your own
project.)

And I also heard that everyone is busy. Although eOceans can save hundreds
of hours or more in data processing, finding time to learn about it can
still be hard.

So, we've also added more group onboarding sessions, but cut them down to
just 30-minutes, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. My goal is to give you the
right training in those 30 minutes to create, launch, and deliver your own
project on your own, whenever you are ready.

I hope you can join me in one of the sessions this month — I'd love to help
and answer any questions you have about launching and delivering your
projects.

Still unsure? We created this *20-minute video*

what we covered in the summer sessions.

Please feel free to share this with colleagues outside the MARMAM
community, and DM me if you need support more urgently.

Thanks,
Chris
