Understanding marine mammal distributions, habitat preferences, and responses
to environmental change is essential for effective marine conservation and
ecosystem management. Joint Species Distribution Models (JSDMs) provide a
powerful framework for investigating multiple species simultaneously,
identifying shared environmental drivers and exploring patterns of species
co-occurrence.

This four-day, hands-on course introduces Hierarchical Modelling of Species
Communities (HMSC), a flexible Bayesian framework for analysing multi-species
ecological data in R.

Using ecological datasets and practical exercises, participants will learn to:

  * Build and fit hierarchical joint species distribution models in R.

  * Investigate how environmental variables influence species occurrences and
abundances.

  * Examine species co-occurrence and potential ecological associations.

  * Incorporate spatial and temporal variation into multi-species models.

  * Integrate species traits and phylogenetic relationships.

  * Assess model performance, convergence, and predictive accuracy.

  * Visualise and interpret species-level and community-level responses to
environmental change.

Applications to marine mammal research

The methods taught are particularly relevant to researchers investigating
cetacean and pinniped distributions, habitat use, marine biodiversity, and the
effects of environmental change on marine ecosystems.

Potential applications include modelling the distributions of multiple cetacean
species, investigating relationships with sea surface temperature, bathymetry
and prey availability, examining spatial patterns of marine mammal assemblages,
and assessing community-level responses to changing oceanographic conditions.

Who should attend?

Marine mammal ecologists, cetacean and pinniped researchers, marine
conservation scientists, spatial ecologists, and researchers working with
multi-species marine biodiversity datasets. The course is also suitable for PhD
students and postdoctoral researchers seeking to develop their ecological
modelling skills in R.

Course format: Four days of interactive lectures and practical exercises using
R. All sessions are recorded, with 30 days of access following the course.
