That argument has been made by a lot of people
including Sidney Hook. Hook viewed Hegel's pantheism
as being an atheism in religious guise. At any rate,
he could not have occupied a university chair in Prussia
as an avowed atheist. At the same time there is no
question that Hegel's philosophy had a profound effect
on liberal Protestant theology in Germany and elsewhere
during the nineteenth century.

We do know that during his youth, Hegel had been much
more of an avowed freethinker than he was during his
maturity when he was teaching in Berlin. To the end of
his days, though, he always celebrated Bastille Day at
his home.

That's pretty much my understanding of Hegel's position concerning
the relationship between philosophy and theology. The
philosopher grasps the truth about reality by intellectual means
whereas the theologian does so by means of metaphors and
analogies. Hegel applied that sort of analysis to lots of
Christian doctrines like the Trinity.
