The Euromaidan politicians have always been gung-ho to join NATO, using the same pretext as the US and West European politicians from the time the organization was founded - that it was a "defensive" alliance against Soviet, and now Russian, "expansion". Following the Orange Revolution in 2005, when Yushchenko and Tymoshenkp became heads of state, Ukraine entered into the Intensified Dialogue programme with NATO, culminating in March 2008, with Ukraine's officially application to join the alliance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Membership_Action_Plan#Ukraine 2.
