Anzac Day is a big day in Australia and New Zealand. It commemorates the day, April 25, in 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) joined in the attempted invasion of what is now Turkey, at a place called Gallipoli on the Dardenelles peninsula. For many years, Anzac Day (a public holiday) was a day when militarism was on display and during the Vietnam War it was quite common for the public Anzac services to be disrupted by anti-Vietnam War protesters. After Vietnam, Anzac Day became less and less of a big deal. Fewer people attended the services, school kids weren't taken along and so on; the old conservative militarism fell out of public favour. However, in recent years there has been a liberal rewriting of the Anzac narrative and the ceremonies have become dominated by a kind of liberal imperialism. Attendances have gone up markedly and people who, a few decades ago, would have dreamed of going to the ceremonies, let alone taking their kids along, now are keen attendees. The old blatantly jingo militarist imperialism is out, and the new touchy-feely humanitarian imperialism is in (certainly in NZ). Below are a few articles on Redline of relevance: It might be a bit early, as Anzac Day is six weeks away, but here’s an interesting piece Dean Parker wrote about the need to remember those who resisted WW1: https://rdln.wordpress.com/2013/08/14/anzac-day-time-to-remember-those-who-tried-to-resist-war/ A review of Field Punishment #1: https://rdln.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/field-punishment-no-1-reviewed-reminder-that-the-wars-not-over/ And here’s a piece on the Gallipoli invasion and what was really going on: https://rdln.wordpress.com/2012/04/24/gallipoli-invasion-a-dirty-and-bloody-business/ An article on Stevan Eldred Grigg’s book ‘The Great Wrong War': https://rdln.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/stevan-eldred-griggs-the-great-wrong-war-nz-society-and-ww1/ . _________________________________________________________ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
