My old girl-friend Debby from the Houston branch of the SWP, who is
featured in the comic book I did with Harvey Pekar, was the daughter of
a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor.
She, him, her mom and her sister used to perform as the Singing Jenkins
at revival meetings. I wish I had held on to the record she gave me of
them performing. When she was at Wheaton College, a religious school,
she met her husband Tom who was also religious. The two got involved
with the Vietnam antiwar movement and then joined the YSA on campus and
then the SWP after they graduated.
After the Houston branch went nuts, she and a couple of other women were
expelled for not informing on pot smoking comrades. The last I heard,
she got religion again and married a member of the congregation.
