Thanks to Michael Karadjis for this very informative article. The Druze have tried to remain neutral because they don't trust either the government or the rebels. The rebels are a mixed bag. Some are very hostile to religious minorities such as the Druze. Faylaq al-Sham, one of the rebel groups coopted by Turkey and used in the invasion of Afrin, is carrying out the forced conversion of Yazidis: anfenglishmobile.com/rojava/gangs-force-yazidis-in-afrin-to-convert-to-islam/ In June 2015, Jabhat al-Nusra carried out a massacre of 20 Druze in a village in Idlib. This was condemned by other rebel groups. But Nusra also carried out the forced conversion of the Druze population under their rule. As far as I know (Michael can correct me if I am wrong) this was not condemned by the other rebel groups that still existed in Idlib. (By this time Nusra had destroyed the Syrian Revolutionaries Front, an alliance of secular rebel groups). Religious and ethnic minorities have generally been distrustful of the rebels. This has weakened the rebel movement and contributed to their inability to defeat Assad. There can be little doubt, this horrific ISIS crime was facilitated, if not organised, by the Assad regime, to punish the Suweida Druze for refusing to be conscripted into Assad's army, and specifically it seems, for refusing to be part of Assad's upcoming attack on Greater Idlib. We've always said that ISIS wouldn't exist without Assad, and that is even more true today now that ISIS has been driven out of 99% of Syria.
